New York – New York has agreed to a $40 million settlement with five men falsely accused of an attack on a Central Park jogger in 1989. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), City Comptroller Scott Stringer stated on Friday that a settlement had been reached, but did not specify what the exact amount was, just that it was “in the ballpark” of the $40 million figure.

The defendants in the rape and beating case served six to 13 years in prison prior to having their convictions thrown out in 2002. The black and Hispanic men were all in their teens when they were convicted in 1990, in a case that sparked racial controversy. The victim, then 28, was a white woman. When she was found after the attack 75 percent of her blood had drained from her body, and her skull had been smashed.

Civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton, is quoted as stating of the settlement, “It is also a victory for those in the community that stood with them from day one and believed in their innocence in this case… As supporters, we were viciously attacked for standing with them, but we were on the right side of history.”
