Connecticut – A police officer who was fired last week from the Middletown Police Department says she endured harassment and discrimination after revealing in 2012 that she was transgender. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Francesca Quaranta has filed a lawsuit against the city of Middletown accusing the city of failing to investigate allegations in her previous complaint.

Quaranta is quoted by the AP as stating, “They made my life a living hell and nightmare to create the situation we’re in today. The system totally failed me and it has completely destroyed my life… I never should have told them. I was naive to think they would adjust.”

Quaranta reportedly received a letter from Middletown Mayor Daniel Drew last week regarding the termination of her employment. Drew alleged she had failed a fitness for duty evaluation among other complaints, and was being fired for administrative purposes.

Drew is quoted as stating to the AP on Monday of the matter, “She has refused to avail herself of the opportunities we presented to get her back to work.”

He also stated that one report of discriminatory behavior toward Quaranta had been made, which led to the suspension of the offending sergeant.
