Hawaii – The Department of Human Service in Hawaii has launched a new program to help extend support services for those aging out of the foster care system. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Imua Kakou program will allow youth in foster care to receive housing education opportunities until the age of 21.
As noted by the AP, the program, launched on Tuesday is designed for individuals who were placed in guardianship after turning 16, or who turned 18 while still in the system.
The department has cited research that shows an increased risk of individuals who leave foster care without support for becoming homeless, unemployed, or incarnated. They are also stated to be at a high risk of substance abuse.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie has stated that the program exemplifies the state’s mission to continue supporting foster youth who still need help after turning 18.
