Michigan – A state agency says the 12-year-old boy found his basement following an 11-day search had been abused. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Michigan’s child-welfare agency alleges the child had been abused by his father and stepmother who forced him to get up early for grueling workouts.
The state is reportedly seeking to have the parental rights of his father, Charlie Bothuell IV terminated, as well as the parental rights of his stepmother, Monique Dillard-Bothuell, who is mother to two other children.
The child, Charlie Bothuell V, was found in the basement of his family’s home last month, several days after being reported missing. His father made impassioned pleas to the media, prior to the child being discovered in the home.
The Department of Human Services is quoted as stating in a court filing, that Charlie “has experienced physical abuse by his father … for the entire two years he has resided in Mr. Bothuell’s residence… The abuse included being physically disciplined with a PVC pipe on his butt, feet, chest, head, thighs, sides and arms. … He was often too sore to sit or walk.”
No criminal charges have been filed in connection with the allegations.
