Indiana – Complex state laws concerning bicycle riders may be too difficult for riders or motorists to understand some suggest. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), experts say part of the reason the number of related accidents have increased in areas like Indianapolis, despite special lanes for cyclists being added, could be due to the confusion over the laws, which leaves cyclists and motorists unsure of how they should interact.
Personal injury attorney Lance Worland is quoted by the AP as stating of some of the rules, “According to the letter of the law, a cyclist can be in the middle of the road in his lane cycling, as long as he’s following the rules of the road… I think drivers a lot of times aren’t aware of that, and don’t realize the cyclist has a right to be there.”
Worland further notes that his law firm has seen an increase in the number of injuries sustained by cyclists in recent years.
Nancy Tibbett, executive director of Bicycle Indiana, has said her group recommends that cyclists ride in the right one-third of the lane and not too close to the curb for their safety.
