U.S. – In spite of a marked increase in the number of people choosing the use of more hard to crack password types over time, research indicates that many people still prefer to use simplistic ones. As reported by WebProNews, the number sequence “123456” topped the recent list of the most common passwords used for another year.
Included in the top ten items on the list provided by SplashData, which compiles the list from more than 3 million passwords were also “password” and “12345.”
Security expert Mark Burnett is quoted in the report as stating of the findings, “The bad news from my research is that this year’s most commonly used passwords are pretty consistent with prior years… The good news is that it appears that more people are moving away from using these passwords. In 2014, the top 25 passwords represented about 2.2% of passwords exposed. While still frightening, that’s the lowest percentage of people using the most common passwords I have seen in recent studies.”
