Orlando, FL—Walt Disney World is being sued by the mother of a former monorail driver who was tragically killed in a fatal monorail collision last year. The wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the resort on Monday, January 25, 2010, according to information provided by CBS4.com.
It was reported that 21-year-old Adam Wuennenberg was operating a monorail train on July 5, 2009, when “another monorail switched tracks and backed into him”. After the incident, Wuennenberg’s injuries allegedly proved fatal after having to be extricated from the locomotive. The work place death was the first to occur in association with the Walt Disney World monorail system, which has been used for nearly four decades.
The lawsuit, filed by Wuennenberg’s mother, Christine Wuennenberg, reportedly claims safety procedures that may have prevented the fatal incident were not in practice at the time. Accident investigations allegedly confirmed that the monorail system coordinator was not at the center console at the time of the wreck. Another Disney employee also reportedly admitted to erroneously activating a track switch, consequently leading to the monorail train collision. Walt Disney World was fined $32,500 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov, after the board discovered safety violations. Officials did not immediately disclose details concerning the extent of damages sought out by the victim’s mother.
