Washington – Several workers in the Capitol recently staged a protest regarding the proposed income disparities between different classes of workers. Much attention has been focused on the issue since stories emerged about a janitor who stated that despite being employed he was homeless.
According to a recent report by the Associated Press (AP), a significant number of the restaurant employees at the Capitol make less than $11 per hour, which does not sufficiently cover their expenses. Several are forced to take on second jobs to pay their bills.
Lawmakers are being urged to consider making changes that would afford workers in these circumstances a “living wage.”
The workers who were part of the protest are employed by Restaurant Associates, which handles food services for both the Senate and the House. The food service contracts are reportedly up for renewal this year.
