Washington? – U.S. auto safety regulators have begun investigating reports about possible air bag defects involving some older model Honda vehicles. The Associated Press reported that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's investigation covers approximately 384,000 cars with the model year 2008.
The agency has said in documents that it received approximately 19 complaints from consumers that in the Accord, there was a failure with the air bag control computer. The report says that a Florida driver was injured after hitting a concrete wall while traveling at 50 miles per hour and the air bags failed to deflate. Others have reportedly stated that they were charged on average $500 to replace the computer in order for the issue to be fixed.
One of the complainants is quoted as writing “This also means that the safety of the vehicle passengers and operators are in jeopardy and potentially face serious injury or death.”
Honda has reportedly stated that it is cooperating with the probe and plans to conduct an internal review.
