Texas – A Texas couple has filed a lawsuit against Zofran maker GlaxoSmithKline, claiming the anti-nausea drug caused their child to be born with a birth defect. The Legal Examiner reports that at least 34 lawsuits have been filed against the major drug company in connection with claims purporting there is a link between taking Zofran during pregnancy and birth defects.

The mother alleges she was prescribed Zofran in 1997 before her daughter was born in 1998. The plaintiffs say that the child was diagnosed with a “secondary” cleft palate shortly after she was born.

The family says the child underwent multiple surgeries prior to the age of five and required “intensive speech therapy” for years due to her condition.

Michael Monheit, Esquire, of Monheit Law is quoted as stating of Zofran “Zofran is a first-line treatment for more severe cases of pregnancy-related nausea… But its effects on unborn children have never been adequately investigated by Glaxo, and the company has never sought its approval as a morning sickness drug.”
