Washington – The Food and Drug Administration recently finalized new rules regarding food safety. In accordance with the new requirements, food manufacturers in the U.S. are required to develop detailed plans and implement them for the prevention of foodborne illness, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The recent steps have progressed the government toward implementing the Food Safety Modernization Act, which was passed by Congress five years ago. There are seven major rules included in the law that are expected to be finalized next year. Each of the provisions are geared toward modernizing the processes for food manufacturing following a string of fatal food borne illness outbreaks.
The rules are reportedly applicable for the manufacturing of foods for humans, livestock, and pets. A failure on the part of manufacturers to comply may result in action by the FDA.
The report notes that an estimated one in six Americans are sickened by foodborne illnesses each year.
