The use of the so-called career counseling cheques (in Belgium called: ‘loopbaanbegeleiding cheques‘) shows more people take part in career counseling.
Within two years, the use of career counseling cheques increased with 87 percent. This is evident from an evaluation report on behalf of the Flemish Minister for Employment Philippe Muyters (N-VA).
“Go to work whistling.” With this slogan career counseling cheques were launched 2 years ago, with these you can buy career counseling. The slogan means you go happy to work. And the Flemings have found a clear way to career counseling.
For 40 euros you can order a career counseling cheque at the VDAB, therewith you can buy 4 hours of career counseling. Each Fleming is entitled to two career counseling cheques every 6 years. In the last two years 28.573 cheques have been bought.
Linda van den Bulck has just completed her career counseling. Three years ago she started her own business as a 56-year-old woman. Together with her husband she was going to grow saffron in the Kempen. But Linda felt a little uncertain. Networking is important as an entrepreneur, but could she do this?
“My career counseling coach has made me realize that I had a lot of experience”, she tells, “and networking is really nothing else but making contact with people. The career counseling coach made me experience that I’m very good at it. So I got self-confidence through the career counseling and realized entrepreneurship indeed was something for me.”
“And that is the intention” says, Flemish minister for Employment, Muyters, “dwell on your career and think about what you really want and where you want to be in five years”.
The minister is therefore satisfied that the career counseling cheques were introduced successfully two years ago. 22.652 people used them in the past two years. Also, the number of career centres where you can follow career counseling has increased. There are now four times more than two years ago.
And to be able to follow career counseling close to home also lowers the threshold. And this is shown by the figures. Although still mostly highly skilled people, women and people in their thirties choose for career counseling, the past two years also more low-skilled and people over fifty requested for a career counseling cheque.
Only people with disabilities dropped out, and that is worrying, says the minister. He lets investigate what can be done about it.
