FDA: Company Knew of Salmonella Contamination, Didn’t Act
March 10, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ FDA inspectors say Basic Food Flavors, the company at the center of a massive food recall, knew that its plant was contaminated with salmonella but continued to make and sell flavoring tainted with the bacteria, The Washington Post reports.
Inspection records from the FDA state that managers at the plant knew on Jan. 21 that the facility tested positive for salmonella. Yet, the company kept shipping its flavoring, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, to foodmakers.
The company tested for bacteria twice in January and once in February with the tests coming back positive for salmonella contamination each time. However, the FDA only learned of the contamination after one of the foodmakers detected salmonella in one lot of the flavoring it purchased.
