A university student has pleaded guilty to assault of a teaching assistant.

Dallas, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) – A University of Texas student has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing a teaching assistant last year. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, John Shaffer entered the plea Thursday and is set to be sentenced for the crime next month.

Shaffer was reportedly offered a 15 year prison sentence prior to entering the plea. Defense attorney Paul Shunatona is quoted in the report as stating of his punishment, “I’d like to see him get at least a second chance… He’s got no prior criminal record whatsoever, he’s a young man. He’s got some problems.”

Shaffer is further quoted as stating in an interview regarding the attack, “I don’t want to be a threat to anyone… I don’t want to be afraid of myself.” He reportedly did not know the victim prior to the attack.
