Riverdale, MD—Maryland-based Chambers Funeral Home and Crematorium had its license revoked after inspectors found approximately 40 bodies strewn atop one another inside an on-site garage. The Maryland Board of Morticians and Funeral Directors discovered the morbid scene on April 26, 2010, according to information provided by CNN.
Investigators from the Maryland Board of Morticians and Funeral Directors responded to the funeral home on April 26 to conduct an unspecified inspection. Upon doing so, they were shocked to come across about 40 bagged corpses in a pile on the floor of the garage. The 12?12 garage was used to store bodies awaiting cremation and allegedly reeked of an overwhelming odor. An employee at the funeral home even warned inspectors of the highly unpleasant site by stating, “Don’t get upset about all the bodies in there.”
As if the site were not disturbing enough, bodily fluids from the human remains allegedly oozed from the body bags. The leaking fluids reportedly caused labels identifying the remains to become scrawled. In connection with the incident, state funeral board president Hari Close stated, “Even somebody who donates their body to science, they still should be treated with dignity… Not to mention the health and safety issues with the body fluids flowing out.”
A hearing to determine whether Chambers Funeral Home and Crematorium will be able to get their license back is expected at the end of the month.
