Jefferson, IN—A 50-year-old Jeffboat employee died while on the job early Monday morning, May 10, 2010. The worker reportedly fell from the deck of a barge at the Jeffersonville business, as reported by the Courier-Journal.
Robert E. Harrison Jr., 50, of the 1300 block of Cherry Blossom Drive in Louisville was carrying a 50-pound suit case containing welding equipment, when he apparently fell over a 3-foot-tall chain railing. Harrison was reportedly trying to get around a 24-inch fan that was on the narrow gunnel, or walkway, when he fell. Jeffboat pipe welder Eric Caines stated, “He lost his balance and his equipment pulled him over the edge. He was just trying to get around that fan.” Harrison reportedly fell about 20 feet.
Emergency crews rushed Harrison from Jeffboat to University Hospital where his injuries proved fatal. Attending medical professional pronounced Harrison dead at about 7:35 a.m. Officials say he died of multiple injuries related to the fall.
The workplace accident is currently under investigation. Harrison has reportedly been an employee of Jeffboat for 18 years. The federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) investigator was dispatched to Jeffersonville on Monday to investigate the fatal accident.
