Oakland, CA—Cost Plus Inc. and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have issued a product safety recall of Moroccan tea glasses. The CPSC announced the voluntary recall on Thursday, May 27, 2010, due to a potential risk of lead exposure.
Approximately 14,000 Moroccan tea glasses were recalled after it was discovered that they contain excessively high levels of lead in the exterior coloring.
Lead, which is noxious if ingested by children, has the potential to cause serious health effects. The Oakland-based distributor has not received any reports of injuries of adverse events in connection with the recalled tea glasses.
According to the CPSC, “The recalled Moroccan tea glasses were sold in 7-ounce and 11.25-ounce sizes. The glasses have an etched graphic design on the outside of the glass and were sold in assorted colors such as blue, green, and red.”
The tea glasses were manufactured in Morocco and sold at Cost Plus/World Market stores nationwide. The hazardous Moroccan tea glasses were available for purchase from June 2009 through November 2009. The 7-ounce tea glasses were valued at approximately $5, while the 11.25-ounce tea glasses cost about $6.
Consumers have been urged to cease use of the potentially toxic tea glasses and return them to Cost Plus/World Market to a full reimbursement.
