Long Island, NY—A fireworks storage facility that exploded and sent one worker to the hospital sparked a brush fire in the woods surrounding the Francis S. Gabreski County Airport in Westhampton. The fire and explosion ignited on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at around 9:20 a.m., as reported by 27East.com.

The Westhampton Beach Fire department stated the fireworks ignited at a storage facility owned by Bay Fireworks, a commercial pyrotechnics company. By 11:50 a.m., the brush fire was reportedly extinguished. It is unknown what caused the fireworks to go off.

A man who was working with the fireworks was injured in the explosion. He was flown by helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment. His injuries were reportedly described as “minor.”

Fire Marshalls are reportedly investigating the fire.

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department and the East Quogue, Gabreski Airport, Eastport, East Moriches, Riverhead, Flanders, Quogue and Hampton Bays fire departments responded to the emergency call. Members of the Westhampton War Memorial and East Quogue, Flanders and Hampton Bays ambulances also responded to the scene. In addition, members of the Southampton Town Police Department, Suffolk County Sheriffs Office and the Suffolk County Fire Marshals Office, as well as agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also responded to the blast.
