Shawano County, WI—A man was found dead several hours after he fell into a grain elevator on Wednesday morning, June 16, 2010. The accident reportedly occurred around 10 a.m., in Zachow, just east of Bonduel, as reported by Fox11.
According to Pulaski Fire Chief Randy Wichlacz, “The corn was hung up and the individual had gone inside to scrape some down and it kind of collapsed on him and just kept drawing him down.”
Authorities have identified the worker as Greg Siolka, 50, of De Pere.
Rescue teams and fire crews worked for hours trying to rescue Siolka from the grain. Rescuers cut several holes into the large grain elevator, to help get air inside the bin and to remove corn.
Nearby farmers who arrived at the scene to watch the rescue effort compared falling to a grain elevators full of dried corn to walking on quicksand.
The owner of the grain elevators, Stuart Sorenson, said Siolka had been a longtime friend and employee.
Nearly 50 people arrived at the scene to assist in the rescue efforts. The crew members are currently being monitored because of the extended exposure to the dust particles that were emitting from the grain elevator. At this time no serious issues have been reported.
