Martin County, MN—Police officials are currently investigating whether alcohol was a factor in a two-vehicle collision that killed four people on Saturday, July 10, 2010. The fatal crash occurred just before 6:00 a.m., at the intersection of County Road 27 and 180th Street near the town of Welcome, as reported by the Star Tribune.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said, the car sped through a yield sign as it headed west on 180th Street before slamming into the cab of a semi-truck, which caused the semi to dump its load of corn and flip over into a ditch. The car did not overturn, but instead it crashed into a soybean field. The semi-truck driver estimated that the car was traveling faster than the 55 mph speed limit.
Four people inside the car were killed in the wreck. A passenger, identified as a young woman, managed to survive the violent crash and was rushed to a Rochester hospital in critical condition.
The truck driver was treated for his injuries and released.
Police officials found an open bottle of liquor inside the car, leading officers to believe alcohol was involved. An autopsy will determine if the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the deadly accident.
A full investigation is underway.
