Grand Rapids, MI—A tragic accident at a western Michigan dairy farm left two teenagers dead after falling into a silo. The two teens were reportedly power-washing a silo at Yankee Springs Dairy Farm on Monday, July 12, 2010, when the fatal accident occurred, as reported by MLive.com.
Authorities were called to the farm located at 136th Avenue, just east of Patterson Road, about five miles east of Wayland at around 6:15 p.m., when the one of the teen’s father, who also works at the farm, noticed the boys did not check out from the job on time. One of the farm’s foreman then went to the silo where the teens were working and found no signs of them, other than the askewed ladders.
Not long after, sheriff’s officers discovered two bodies and a ladder inside the empty silo. The teens were identified as Victor Perez, 18, and Francisco Mendez Martinez, 17.
It is unclear how the teens died, and because there were no witnesses, the case will likely go unsolved.
A full investigation is underway. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is expected to arrive at the scene to conduct a full investigation.
