PROVO, Utah – A fatal pedestrian accident claimed the life of a 27-year-old Brigham Young University (BYU) student on Sunday, September 19, 2010. The collision occurred between 500 West and 600 East in Provo on BYU’s campus, as reported by CarsonNow.org.
According to police officials, two girls were crossing North Campus Drive, when the driver of a Nissan Altima suddenly became distracted, causing him to hit the two women who were in the roadway. The driver claimed he didn’t see the two pedestrians crossing the street.
BYU Campus Police Lt. Arnold Lennon said, “He said he thought he heard someone honking at him from the museum area so he turned to his left to look. As he turned back the two women were in front of him and he thought he could avoid them but he was unable to.”
One of the women, identified as Jessica Wilson, was rushed to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where medical professionals pronounced her dead. The other woman, a friend of Wilson’s who was visiting from Astonia, was also rushed to the hospital. She reportedly sustained leg injuries and is expected to be okay.
Witnesses to the crash told officials that the driver had a green light at the time of the collision. Officials are unsure why the women were crossing the crosswalk while the traffic light was green.
The driver of the Altima was reportedly shaken up following the accident. He also attends BYU.
Drugs and alcohol don’t appear to have been factors.
A full investigation is underway.
