Fontana, CA– Officials are searching through the mangled wreckage of two trains, who collided on Thursday, September 8, 2010, which left two people injured, including a conductor who lost his arm. The train crash was reported around 11:55 p.m., just south of 10 Freeway at Cherry Avenue, as reported by CNN.
According to preliminary investigations, a Union Pacific freight train was traveling westbound on the railroad tracks, when it slammed into the rear-end of another train, which officials believe may have been stationary at the time.
The engineer managed to free himself and climb from the wreckage, before trying to help the conductor, who was still trapped. Responding emergency crews worked to free the conductor, but were not successful. Rescue crews ultimately had to amputate the conductors arm in order to free him from the rail car.
Both men were rushed to an area hospital for treatment. The conductor is reportedly listed in critical condition. The engineer suffered moderate injuries.
Officials are investigating the wreck. It is unknown what caused the train to rear-end the stationary train.
