New York – A recent study suggests bisphosphonates are linked to an increased risk of stroke in patients with cancer. As reported by Reuters, the study found that the osteoporosis fighting drugs may also increase the risks of abnormal heart rhythms in these patients.
As noted in the report, despite the findings, the lead author of the study notes that the drugs still provide benefits for patients with cancers that have spread to the bone, which outweigh the risks.
Dr. James S. Goodwin of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston is quoted in the report as stating of the drugs, “These drugs are still very, very, very valuable drugs… The risk of stroke from atrial fibrillation can be entirely prevented if we’re on top of it.”
