Los Angeles, CA—A juvenile motorist may be facing felony hit-and-run and manslaughter charges after running a red light, hitting and killing a pedestrian before slamming into a school bus, injuring 19 people, as reported by MSNBC.
On Monday, October 25, 2010, three boys in a black BMW, reportedly ran a red light at around 3:20 p.m., which led them to hit a pedestrian and a school bus, which subsequently overturned in the intersection in Boyle Heights, east of downtown Los Angeles. Sadly, the pedestrian was killed in the automobile accident.
The juveniles fled on foot from the scene, but were stopped by a construction worker, who detained them until police officers arrived.
The school bus, which was carrying 53 Roosevelt High School students, was on its way back to school from the East Los Angeles Skills Center. Students were seen pulling one another from the window and emergency exits of the overturned bus.
Eighteen students and the bus driver were rushed to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. The students reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the bus driver was originally listed in critical condition, but was since upgraded to serious condition.
Twenty-five other students were not injured in the wreck. They were taken to a nearby police station, where officers and firefighters interviewed them.
The three boys in the BMW were also hospitalized with injuries. The identities and ages of the boys are being withheld.
The driver of the BMW may be facing felony hit-and-run and manslaughter charges. The two passengers in the vehicle may also face conspiracy charges for fleeing the scene of the crash. After they are released from the hospital, they will be taken to Eastlake Juvenile Hall for booking.
Officials are trying to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the deadly crash.
A total of 11 fire companies, eight ambulances, two fire battalion command units, one air ambulance and one heavy rescue unit responded to the accident.
