Oct 27, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ — The Food and Drug Administration has been questioning the safety of caffeinated alcoholic drinks like Four Loko, which sent nine university students to the hospital.
Health officials worry that increasing popularity of caffeinated alcoholic drinks among college students poses potential health risks. Not only could the students be exposing themselves to cardiovascular damage, there’s an immediate personal safety risk because the caffeine contributes to people underestimating how drunk they are.
Federal regulators have threatened to ban caffeinated alcoholic drinks unless the manufacturers can provide conclusive evidence that the drinks are not harmful. Despite this warning, many of these products remain on the market, pushing some states to take their own measures.
Both Washington State and New Mexico have proposed legislation to ban the sale of alcoholic energy drinks.
