Albany, OR—A van rolled down an embankment in Linn County, leaving one person dead and nine others injured on Monday, November 1, 2010. The van rolled about 100 feet around 9:10 a.m., at the end of the Upper Calapooia Drive, as reported by the Democrat Herald.
Rescue crews located the wreckage about 5 1/2 miles northwest of Blue River Reservoir near the intersection of U.S. Forest Service roads 1510 and 2820. The embankment was apparently so steep that rescue teams had to use rope rescue techniques to help lift the victims to the top of the embankment.
Lifeflight and Reach helicopters airlifted three people to the Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield for treatment. Five other victims were taken to a Lebanon and another victim was transported to a hospital in Corvallis.
For unknown reasons, five people left the scene before emergency crews arrived, but later returned to the scene or were located.
Officials have withheld the identities of the victims, but they are said to be a reforestation contracting company crew who were staying at a motel in Sweet Home.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved in the wreck. It is also unknown if they were wearing their seatbelts.
A full investigation is underway.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Eugene Mountain Rescue, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officers, and the Springfield Police Department; Springfield-area medics, McKenzie-Blue River and Sweet Home fire departments ass responded to the scene.
