Houston, TX—A 3-month-old baby is in stable condition, following an accident, which left the driver dead as he was fleeing from police on FM 1488. Officers believed the motorist might have been involved in a robbery earlier that day, as reported by HCOnline.com.

The suspect, Chad Derek McMichael, 33, was reportedly fleeing from police in a high-speed chase, while traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph. When McMichael tried to avoid the a strip of spikes laid down by a DPS trooper near the intersection of FM 1488 and Corporate Woods, he lost control of his Chevrolet Impala.

McMichael drove through a wooden property fence to the Lake Windcrest subdivision, rolling several times before the vehicle came to a stop in dense vegetation near the lake Windcrest golf course.

Police officials heard the cries of the screaming baby, who was hanging upside-down in her car seat. Officials removed a rear window in order to save the baby girl.

McMichael was pronounced dead at the scene.

A medical helicopter airlifted the baby to Memorial Hermann in Houston for treatment. She is reportedly in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Just before the accident, at 11:30 a.m., Magnolia Police Detective Brian Clack stopped the Impala, after the officer noticed that the vehicle as missing its license plate. A man, who was initially driving the vehicle and didn’t have identification, exited the vehicle, as instructed by Clack, when McMichael jumped in the driver’s seat, locked the doors and sped off. The Impala reportedly matched the description of a vehicle used in a robbery earlier that day in Harris County.

Officers believe the baby belonged to man who was originally driving the Impala.
