Passaic County, NJ—A West Milford single-engine plane crash Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, left a commercial pilot for American Airlines critically injured. According to information provided by NorthJersey.com, the first thing the pilot told his sister in the aftermath of the aviation accident was, “We lost power.”
Reports indicated 49-year-old William Fallon was piloting a single-engine 1975 Cessna 182P and had just taken off from Greenwood Lake Airport, when the aircraft apparently lost power at an altitude of approximately 500 feet.
Mark Gangi was a passenger aboard the plane and told Fallon’s sister, Paddy, that her brother was able to steer the plane in the direction of the airport runway, so it would not crash in the woods.
Gangi was able to escape from the wrecked aircraft on his own and call 911. The severely injured pilot, on the other hand, had to be extricated by emergency responders after he became pinned by the engine.
Before Fallon underwent nine hours of surgery, he told his sister that the plane had been inspected not too long before the plane wreck occurred.
As of Monday, Fallon was on a respirator and remained listed in critical condition at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He reportedly sustained multiple fractures in the plane crash.
Gangi, who suffered a facial laceration and possible other injuries in the aviation accident, was listed in fair condition at Morristown Memorial on Monday.
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) spokesperson Keith Holloway said an investigation into the West Milford plane crash was underway.
