FDA medical advisors say Darvon/Darvocet causes addiction and suicide.
West Palm Beach, FL (JusticeNewsFlash.com)–At the end of last month, federal medical advisors for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov strongly recommended the nationwide banning of Darvon, a prescription pain medication. Darvon, a narcotic pain medication, has been used to treat pain for over 50 years in the United States since its approval in 1957. The advisory committee voted the risks of Darvon clearly outweigh the benefits.
Darvon is marketed as the popular pain medication called Darvocet and is one of the top 25 most commonly prescribed drugs of all prescription medications available to patients in America. In 2007, over 20 million prescriptions for Darvocet/Darvon were written in America. The medication still remains available by prescription and is currently being filled by pharmacists in drug stores across the country today despite the government’s own medical advisory board’s ruling.
Darvocet has been proven to offer very little pain relief and poses a serious overdose risk allowing it to be used in suicides. Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals and Qualitest/Vintage Pharmaceuticals, the two drug manufacturing companies who make Darvon/Darvocet, say the medication is safe when used as directed. The United Kingdom banned Darvon/Darvocet in 2005 and the FDA remains on the fence with the health, welfare and lives of innocent American consumers 4 years later.
