York County jury finds for brain injury baby returning $4.4 million verdict.
West Palm Beach, FL (JusticeNewsFlash.com)–The parents, of a baby who suffered a permanent brain injury during her birth in 2003 which led to her death on February 13, 2008, sued Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina according to the Herald. The jury in the court case returned a $4.4 million verdict in the medical malpractice lawsuit.
Lawyers for baby Sierra Wilson who was born on November 18, 2003 argued she suffered a permanent brain injury because of lack of oxygen. According to court documents a nurse caring for the pregnant mother failed to monitor the fetal heart strips and recognize the unborn baby was in fatal distress and required immediate emergency intervention. Baby Sierra was born with a permanent brain injury and died because of complications from cerebral palsy she developed because of lack of oxygen during her birth.
The parents sued the hospital also naming the nurse trainee who was negligently assigned to caring for baby Sierra’s mother when she was admitted to the hospital three days before her scheduled induction of labor. The legal team for the plaintiffs cited the hospital and its staff was negligent causing their daughter’s catastrophic injuries.
