Daytona, Beach (JusticeNewsFlash.com) Between the years of 2003 and 2006, the Mentor ObTape vaginal sling was used in thousands of women that suffered from Stress Urinary Incontinence, commonly referred to as SUI. Stress Urinary Incontinence affects about fourteen million American women. The pelvic muscles in women who suffer from SUI become weakened, making it more difficult for the woman to control her bladder and urination. This is so because the woman’s pelvic muscles support her bladder and urethra. Accordingly, everyday actions such as coughing, sneezing and laughing can cause women who suffer from SUI to experience involuntary leakage. As a result, the Mentor Corporation began to manufacture the ObTape bladder sling to alleviate the problems associated with this condition.
Specifically designed to provide reinforcement and added strength to a woman’s vaginal wall, the Mentor ObTape was supposed to support the muscles that manage the flow of urine. However, due to defects in the sling’s design, the product has been known to block the free flow of vital nutrients and oxygen. This deprivation of nutrients and oxygen has caused a considerable number of women to sustain serious and debilitating permanent injuries. Shockingly, of the over 35,000 ObTape patients, an estimated 17 – 18% have experienced or will experience adverse complications directly linked to the vaginal sling. Symptoms of bladder sling-related problems include: vaginal infections and pain, hurtful vaginal extrusions, chronic bloody discharge, urinary tract erosion and vaginal tissue breakdown, pain during intercourse, and severe discomfort in the pelvis, back, hips and legs.
These complications have often required numerous surgeries to remove the defective sling. Even subsequent to these painful surgeries, women are sometimes left with permanent injuries which have a profound effect on their personal lives. While the Mentor Corporation never issued a formal recall for the ObTape vaginal sling, the company discontinued the product in 2006 following criticism that began to reach the national stage via medical journals and publications.
