Los Angeles area high school mourns death of SUV rollover victim.

LOS ANGELES, CA (JusticeNewsFlash.com)–Eight Taft High School prom attendees were involved in an SUV crash Saturday night, injuring seven and killing one on the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway at Eighth Street. The 2003 Chevrolet SUV lost control and rolled over just south of 3rd street in Los Angeles County. The victims were on their way to their high school’s senior prom at the California Science Center, as reported by KTLA-TV Los Angeles News.

Jennifer Perla, 16, of Encino, died at the scene when she was thrown from the Chevrolet SUV during the fatal rollover collision. The seven other passengers were injured as well. The California Highway Patrol reports, the driver, Kenneth Miller, 18, of North Hollywood was trying to avoid colliding with another motor vehicle at the time of the wreck.

The seven passengers, four male, three female were taken to the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and California Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries. Perla and the other passengers were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the automobile accident; The Chevrolet SUV was not equipped with eight seatbelts.

According to the Department of Transportation (DOT) http://www.dot.gov, 1 in 5 Americans fail to buckle up each time they enter a motor vehicle. Amongst teenagers, the seat belt use rates are the lowest, who are usually the most inexperienced drivers, and their passengers typically believe they are invincible. The recent DOT study also revealed 65 percent of motor vehicle collision (MVC) deaths, in 2007, that happened at night were unrestrained 16 to 20 year-olds. The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the fatal highway SUV accident.
