Massachusetts EPA regulators fine Boston area property owners for lead paint violations.

Boston, MA–(JusticeNewsFlash.com)—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) http://www.epa.gov/ levied fines against a Springfield, Massachusetts apartment complex owner and an affiliated property management company for violating federal lead-based paint disclosure requirements, as reported by the EPA. The EPA claims the property manager, National Enterprises, Inc., and owner, MA NO. 2, LLC, violated the federal Lead Disclosure Rule. The named Boston area law breakers neglected to notify and release information to tenants who are renting their Parkview Apartments located at 23-29 Federal Street in Springfield, between June 2004 and January 2005. The apartments are known to contain at least some lead-based paint. The EPA is seeking $11,000 for each of the 30 violations of the Disclosure Rule law. At this time, no reports of any poisonings or serious injuries to the apartment complex residents have surfaced due to the violations.

According to the EPA, exposure to lead paint is a serious health risk to adults, and especially children. It is the job of the owner of rental communities and property mangers to ensure the safety and well-being of their tenants by following lead paint disclosure requirements. Federal and state environmental regulations and laws require owners and managers to notify families of potential lead hazards so they can make informed decisions before they buy or lease housing. Lead paint exposure to infants and young children is especially harmful, and cause the following illnesses, injuries, and disabilities: developmental impairment, reading and learning disabilities, impaired hearing, reduced attention span, hyperactivity, and behavioral problems. In adults, high levels of lead can cause difficulties during pregnancy, high blood pressure, nerve disorders, memory problems, and muscle joint pain.
