Federal grand jury indicts Syracuse laboratory for asbestos violations.

Syracuse, NY (MesotheliomaCancerNews.com)—A Syracuse-based environmental lab, Certified Environmental Services, Inc. (CES), is named in a 16-count indictment from a New York federal grand jury, for falsifying test results to cover up inadequate asbestos removal projects throughout the city, as reported by News Day.

The 16-count indictment names CES, along with five of its employees, with charges of violations of the Clean Air Act, mail fraud, and providing false statements to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) http://www.epa.gov personnel. The environmental lab is accused of a ten yearlong scheme in providing false air quality results to building contractors, who would then turn over the false reports to dozens of building owners. The building owners were lead to believe the asbestos abatement projects conducted in their buildings were successful. The false laboratory results claimed asbestos products and asbestos-containing materials used in the various buildings’ construction was at or below detectable levels. Simply, the structures were deemed clean and free of asbestos, which was not the case.

The indictment filed before a New York federal grand jury, states among the buildings where asbestos and asbestos containing materials still reside are the following: a Syracuse University sorority house, a furniture warehouse, a medical office building, Syracuse television station WSTM, a reading room at the Kellogg Library in Cincinnatus and Cortland Counties, and a Jobs Corps building in Oneonta. Government lawyers are alleging CES is in conspiracy with numerous upstate New York contractors. CES company leaders and managers refused to reveal how many contractors were in on this conspiracy. No contractors have not been charged by attorneys for the government at this time. This is the third major case involving asbestos fraud in the past five years within upstate New York.

Asbestos materials are known to be toxic to humans and the environment. When consumers, residents, and workers come into contact with asbestos containing materials through primary and secondary exposure they may develop any number of asbestos-related illnesses and diseases including fatal cancers like Mesothelioma lung cancer.
