Chicago area residents alerted-1 million Kolcraft children’s play yards may cause injuries.

Chicago, IL–The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov/ announced the recall of at least one million Kolcraft, and Kolcraft licensed brand playpens on July 8, 2009. Kolcraft products are widely perceived by parents and caretakers as a safe product for unattended children. The recall reportedly involves China-made play yards distributed by Kolcraft Enterprises Inc. of Chicago.

Kolcraft received 347 reports concerning the play yards’ side rail, which can fail to latch properly, posing a fall hazard to children who happen to push or lean against the side of the playpen. The potentially defective models recalled include Kolcraft Travelin’ Tot Play yards, and similar play yards with other Kolcraft licensed brand names such as: Carter’s, Sesame Street, Jeep, Contours, Care Bear and Eric Carle. The products were reportedly sold at Babies R Us, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Sears, and Target from January 2000 though January 2009 and retailed between $50 and $160.

The defective product recall was prompted by hundreds of complaints by innocent consumers stating the playpens sides collapse. Twenty-one consumer reports stated the collapsed rail injured children including bumps, bruises, and one concussion. The CSPC advises consumers to stop using the play yard immediately, and to contact Kolcraft or the CSPC for information on how to get a repair kit. If you have been injured by the defective playpen file a report with CPSC at https://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx.
