Giant grocery stores recall Non Fat Dry Milk for possible salmonella.

Baltimore, MD–Giant Food has participated in a recall of Giant brand Non Fat Dry Milk products. Giant Food, also known as Giant-Landover, is a supermarket chain located throughout Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Giant Food is headquartered in Landover, Maryland. The recall was issued after Giant Food was notified by its manufacturer that the Giant brand dried milk items consisted of a previously recalled nonfat dried milk product by Plainview Milk. The recall by Plainview Milk was due to a possible Salmonella contamination. Food safety regulators with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov announced the recall on the Giant brand products on July 1, 2009. An agency under the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the FDA is responsible for maintaining the safety of veterinary products, medical devices, vaccines, cosmetics, dietary supplements, blood products, and foods.

The following product is under federal recall:

– 9.6 oz Giant Nonfat Dried Milk, bearing a “6-8826707833” UPC code and a “FEB 0511S” code

No illnesses related to the recalled milk products have been reported. Although uncommon, Salmonella can cause serious infections in individuals with poor immune systems, children, and the elderly. In otherwise healthy individuals, symptoms of salmonellosis include fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The Prince George’s County firm urges consumers to stop consuming the recalled milk products and throw away any unused portions. A complete refund is available at any Giant Food supermarket with a purchase receipt. Questions can be directed to Giant Food at 1-888-469-4426. Consumers who have been injured due to consumption of the recalled dried milk items may be entitled to compensation for their damages.
