Legal news for California truck wreck attorneys. Man jumps from van when a natural gas tank explodes and causes head-on collision.

California truck wreck attorney alert-A natural gas explosion causes a head-on collision with a Ford F-150.

San Diego, CA—A natural gas explosion in the back of a van rattled windows and desks in buildings as far as 100 feet away. The van transporting the exploding gas tank then slammed head on into a Ford F-150 pickup truck on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The unidentified driver of the van, who is employed by a mobile yacht service, had just finished filling up tanks with 14 gallons of natural gas and stored them in his van. While in transit westbound on Harbor Drive, one of the tanks exploded, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the van. The explosion caused the driver to jump out of the van while it was still moving in the westbound lanes. The unmanned van continued to travel from westbound lanes of Harbor Drive into the eastbound lanes where it struck a Ford F-150 head-on. Four passengers traveling inside of the pickup truck were reportedly unhurt. The identities of the passengers have not been released. It is unknown if the driver of the man was injured when he jumped from the van. Fire fighters with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department stated the other tanks in the van emptied when the one tank exploded.

The natural gas explosion and accident happened close to the Lindbergh Field, which forced officials to close Harbor Drive near Harbor Island Drive. Traffic was reportedly backed up for miles at the airport. Officials were able to reopen routes to the airport by 12:35 p.m.
