Kansas City, MO—A construction worker was tragically killed when a piece of construction equipment fell on him. The fatal construction accident happened Wednesday afternoon, September 16, 2009, on a new section of roadway in the 25,000 block of NE 143rd Street in Clay County, as reported by WDAF.

According to Highway Patrol officials, a construction crew of 15-20 workers were laying asphalt on a new section of road, when the roller came too close to the edge of the roadway and started to fall off the edge. The roller operator jumped off of the machine in a desperate attempt to save himself, but was killed when the roller fell on top of him. The roadway construction crew was reportedly paving a road, which would connect a county road to a new bridge. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by responding emergency medical services (EMS) crews. Phillips Paving reportedly employed the deceased worker for over 10 years. Police officials are withholding the identity of the deceased worker until family members could be notified. Investigators with the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ are expected to conduct a full investigation into the fatal construction accident.
