New York, NY–The New York Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, announced on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, a settlement agreement between the state of New York against Dell and Dell Financial Services (DFS) has been reached. The two named Dell defendants agreed to pay $4 million in restitution, penalties, and costs to settle charges of fraudulent and deceptive business practices which swindled consumers throughout the state of New York.

New York’s highest government lawyer charged the computer giant and its finance company with unfair business practices. The multinational computer manufacturer based in Round Rock, Texas, was charged with consumer deception regarding finance terms, warranties, and rebates. The NYAG claimed the computer company engage in “fraud, false advertising, deceptive business practices and abusive debt collection practices.” as reported in the Wall Street Journal. Dell is also required to change its advertising, sales, and financing practices. Dell, who advertises, markets, and promises customer technical support through their warranty and service agreements, further denied customers of these benefits. Dell customers who have been harmed by the company’s unfair and deceptive business practices may be entitled to compensation.
