Miami, FL—A construction worker was seriously injured after an explosion at a former gas station. The construction accident happened on Tuesday morning, September 29, 2009 in the 300 block of Northwest 79th Street, as reported by The Miami Herald.

Fire officials reported, a unidentified 38-year-old worker’s left leg was severed below the knee after a spark from a saw ignited fumes in the air, and caused an explosion. Two workers were reportedly cleaning out residue, and removing three big gas drums that haven’t been used for over 20 years, when one of the workers began to saw some materials to get them ready for recycling. A spark apparently had a reaction with the fumes in the area and caused an explosion, which severed one of the workers legs. The seriously injured worker and his severed leg was transported by emergency medical services (EMS) crews to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. Medical professionals are hoping to reattach the man’s leg. No other injuries were reported in connection with the explosion. Officials with the Federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ are expected to conduct a full investigation into the construction accident.
