Mine Safety and Health Administration alerts Arizona employment lawyers- An Asarco worker was killed while driving a haul truck.

Tucson, AZ—A worker was killed at the Asarco’s Ray Mine after a vehicle tipped over. The fatal workplace accident happened on Sunday, morning September 27, 2009, at the Ray Mine near Kearny as reported by the Arizona Daily Star.

According to officials, Robert Christopher Stewart, 29, of Globe was driving a haul truck when it hit a safety berm, tipped over, and killed Stewart. Stewart was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by responding emergency medical services (EMS) crews. Stewart had been working at the mine for two years and seven months before the fatal accident occurred. The initial cause of the incident is currently unknown, but investigators believe it was an accident. No one else was reportedly injured in connection with the incident. The mine is still open but the area where the accident occurred in closed until the investigations are completed. The Office of the Arizona State Mine Inspector http://www.asmi.state.az.us/, officials from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) http://www.msha.gov/, and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ are all investigating the fatal accident.

Asarco released a statement stating, “Asarco is cooperating fully with federal and state authorities in their investigation of this accident. Our sympathy and prayers go out to family members, friends and fellow miners who are affected by this loss.”
