The FDA recalled a shipment of cantaloupes due to Salmonella contamination.

Florida product liability lawyer-Melon Acres voluntarily recalls cantaloupes distributed by Farm-Wey Produce located in Lakeland, Florida.

Lakeland, FL–Melon Acres has participated in a voluntary recall of cantaloupes. Farm-Wey Produce of Lakeland, Florida was the distributor of these cantaloupes. The recall was issued after safety regulators with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov discovered that one cantaloupe out of a sample of twenty was infected with Salmonella. The FDA announced the recall on August 21, 2009. The FDA is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The FDA is primarily responsible for the safety of blood products, foods, dietary supplements, vaccines, drugs, medical devices, veterinary products, and cosmetics.

The recalled fruits shipped out on August 13th and August 14th. The affected shipment of cantaloupes was labeled as 41 MG 10, with Bin Numbers 4753 to 4980. Meijer stores in Tipp City, Ohio, Newport, Michigan, and Lansing, Michigan received shipments of those bins. Aldi’s in Greenwood, Indiana also received shipments of the recalled cantaloupes.

No illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported. In rare cases, Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes deadly, infections in young children, the elderly, and people with poor immune systems. Common symptoms of Salmonella include fever, pain, nausea, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting. While the source of contamination is unknown, Melon Acres and the FDA have identified the location where the contaminated cantaloupes were grown. Shipments are no longer made from that site. Melon Acres’ facilities and fields were recently audited by Primus Labs, a food safety auditing company. Results from the audit showed grades of excellent and good for Melon Acres.
