Legal news for Georgia employment attorneys. A reactor at a biodiesel plant exploded and injured a worker.

Occupational Health and Safety Administration alerts Georgia employment lawyers- A worker sustained a broken leg from an explosion.

Savannah, GA—A worker suffered a broken leg after an explosion at a biodiesel plant. A reactor at the plant exploded on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 around 2:45 p.m., at Xenerga Biodiesel located on the 900 block of West Gwinnett Street, as reported by WSAV-TV.

Savannah fire department responded to the scene after a “so-called reactor” exploded. The exploded reactor reportedly is a container, which holds the finished biodiesel product. Flames erupted from the explosion, but the fire sprinkler system at the plant burst and extinguished most of the flames. Savannah fire fighters only had to contain a few hot spots. A worker at plant is believed to have sustained a broken leg from the blast. Police officials reported that no one else was injured in the explosion.

The injured worker was transported by emergency medical services (EMS) crews to a local hospital for treatment of his suspected broken leg. It is currently unknown what prompted the blast, and what the worker was doing when he was injured. The facility where the incident took place apparently processes used cooking oils into biodiesel fuel. Officials with the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration are expected to conduct a full investigation into the workplace accident.
