Legal news for Wisconsin employment attorneys. A worker was killed and another was injured after an explosion and fire at a Columbus plant.

Occupational Health and Safety Administration alerts Wisconsin employment lawyers- A plant explosion at American Packaging Corporation left a worker dead.

Madison, WI—An explosion at American Packaging Corporation killed a worker and left another worker injured. The workplace explosion happened on Sunday, October 18, 2009 around 6:00 p.m. at the rear of the plant in an area which houses washing units, as reported by ABC7 Chicago.

Firefighters from Columbus and Fall River Fire Departments reported, a worker was using a hand-held grinder while working with some floor bolts. Apparently the grinder created some sparks, which ignited with vapors in the area and caused an explosion. The explosion was reportedly so intense that it tore down a sprinkler system. Coincidently, the damaged sprinkler system caused water to release from the pipes and extinguish some the fire left by the explosion. The blast left one worker dead and injured another. The injured employee was transported by area emergency medical services (EMS) teams to a hospital for treatment of the worker’s injuries.

It is believed the two workers are a part of the maintenance crew, because they were reportedly the only ones in the plant at the time of the blast and fire. Officials with the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ are expected to conduct a full investigation into the fatal explosion and fire.

The American Packaging Corporation Columbus plant reportedly offers services in rotogravure printing and lamination. In addition the plant serves beverage, food, personal care, medical, household, pet foot, and other areas.
