Legal news for Virginia employment attorneys. An explosion caused serious damage and injured eight workers.

Virginia Department of Labor and Industry alerts Virginia employment lawyers- An explosion at Crittenden Middle School injured 8 workers.

Hampton Roads, VA—An explosion at Crittenden Middle School collapsed a wall and injured eight people. The explosion occurred on Sunday, November 29, 2009 around 7:00 a.m., while construction crews were working on the roof, as reported by WAVY-TV.

Newport News Police officials stated, construction crews were on the roof of Crittenden Middle School fixing damages from recent storms in the area when the explosion occurred. It is unknown at this time what exactly caused the explosion, but the workers were apparently using propane to melt the tar used on the roof when the explosion occurred. The violent blast caused a 20-foot by 50-foot wall to collapse. Four people were transported by emergency medical services (EMS) crews to Riverside Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Three others were taken to Hampton Sentara Careplex, and another was taken Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment. Advanced life support was reportedly needed for seven of the victims while they were transported to the hospital. The workers were apparently employed by T.R. Driscoll, Inc. based in Lumberton, North Carolina. The roof project has been ongoing for five weeks. Newport News Police and the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry http://www.doli.virginia.gov/ are investigating the explosion. T
