Legal News for Florida Auto Accident Attorneys. A Thunderbird and a charter bus collide head-on, resulting in one fatality and seven minor injuries.

A motor vehicle collision involving a charter bus & a Ford Thunderbird causes one fatality.

Merritt Island, FL—A head-on collision between a cream-colored Ford Thunderbird and a Norwegian Cruise Line charter bus on Merritt Island tragically killed one person and left seven others injured Monday December 14, 2009, as reported by FloridaToday.com. Patrick T. Norton, 49, driver of the Thunderbird, was allegedly swerving down Sykes Creek Parkway heading east for unknown reasons, when he began to drift off the road. Norton then over-corrected and crossed the median into oncoming traffic, where he struck the westbound bus head-on. According to an eyewitness, the Ford driver allegedly never hit his brakes during the crash.

It was reported that Norton died at the scene of the crush after sustaining fatal car crash injuries. There were a total of 43 individuals riding on the charter bus at the time of the wreck, including cruise ship crewmembers and passengers. Emergency medical services (EMS) crews responded to the crash scene to transport an additional seven injured bus passengers to hospitals. Six people were allegedly taken to Cape Canaveral Hospital and one was taken to Wuesthoff Medical Center Rockledge for the treatment of the minor injuries they sustained in the motor vehicle collision (MVC).

According to investigators from the Florida Highway Patrol, it is allegedly suspected that a previous medical condition or the possible use of drugs/alcohol before driving may have been the cause of the crash. Norton’s body was transported to a medical examiners office in Rockledge, and is pending results from an autopsy as well as a blood alcohol test.
