CPSC announced a recall of diving gear due to safety hazard.
Lake City, FL—Lamartek Inc. dba Dive Rite, based in Lake City, Florida, has participated in a voluntary recall of approximately 16,000 Dive Rite Wings due to the drowning hazard they pose, announced the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov on Tuesday, December 22, 2009.
Diving equipment retailers and distributors throughout the United States were reportedly selling the Dive Rite Wings from June 2006 to October 2008 for roughly $359. The wings affected by this voluntary recall have a serial number from 42000 to 72000. These wings were sold in colors including red, blue, or black. The models being affected by this consumer product recall include: Travel, Venture, Rec, Trek, Classic, Nomad, and Super Wings. It was also noted in the CPSC announcement that “springs were used on wings that have an opaque white or blue tinted bladder and welded in flanges.” This excludes wings with a black bladder, which are unaffected by the recall.
It was noted that the buoyancy compensator devices could allegedly leak if the over pressure valve springs in the diving gear were to rust and fail, creating a drowning risk for divers using this equipment. The CPSC urges that consumer’s return the Dive Rite Wings to an authorized product distributor or dealer to have the defective overpressure valve spring replaced, free of charge. No injuries have been reported.
