A Vermont judge has ordered transfer of custody of a child to the former partner of her birth mother.
Vermont (WiredPRNews.com) – A judge has ordered that the birth mother of a 7 year-old girl relinquish custody of the child to her ex-partner. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Janet Jenkins was granted custody of the child by Vermont Family Court Judge William Cohen after her former lesbian partner Lisa Miller denied her the right to visitation.
As noted by the AP, Miller and Jenkins ended their relationship in 2003 three years after being joined in a civil union. Miller gave birth to the child through artificial insemination in 2002, and later renounced homosexuality.
As further noted in the report, the judge also stated that Miller has cut off communication with her attorneys regarding the case. An attorney for Jenkins, Sarah Star, has reportedly expressed hopes that Miller will comply with the judge’s ruling. A failure to do so may result in a warrant for her arrest.
