Chicago crash left police sergeant injured, woman dead.

Chicago, IL—One person was fatally injured in a motor vehicle collision (MVC) involving an SUV, driven by an off-duty police sergeant on the Southwest Side, according to information provided by the Chicago Sun-Times.

The crash allegedly occurred on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at the intersection of Kedzie Avenue and 112th Place after the driver of a Kia Rio failed to stop at a stop sign. The Kia driver, 65-year-old Carol Jacobs, was eastbound on 112th when she ran through the stop sign at the same time as the northbound Dodge Durango was coming through the intersection from Kedzie Ave. around 2:15 p.m. This consequently caused the off-duty police officer in the SUV to strike the Kia on its left side. On impact, the Kia reportedly careened twenty feet off the roadway.

Emergency medical services (EMS) crews responded to the scene to transport the injured to area hospitals for treatment by doctors and nurses. The unidentified off-duty police officer was reportedly taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park for a leg injury she sustained. She has since then been released from the medical center. Jacobs had to be extricated from the vehicle and was allegedly pronounced deceased at 6:11 p.m. according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

No citations were issued, though it was noted that the off-duty sergeant had the right of way at the time of the accident.
